Learning Objectives
Knowledge: Learn how to correctly recognize and write the main functional groups of organic molecules. Skills: Develop interpretative skills of the behavior of organic molecules in nature. Based on the acquired knowledge, the student will be able to predict the chemical-physical characteristics and the reactivity of simple organic molecules.
Prerequisites
Recommended courses: General and inorganic chemistry, Laboratory of general chemistry, Elements of organic chemistry
Teaching Methods
Credits: 3
Number of hours the training activities: 24
Further information
Teaching tools: on-line course on the Moodle platform (http://el.unifi.it/)
where students may download material screened (to register a password
is required).
Type of Assessment
Tests to evaluate the ability to apply the acquired knowledge to practical problems
Course program
Trainings on the basic topics of Organic Chemistry:
- on the representation of organic molecules using structural formulas (complete, condensed and zigzag or segmented formulas), sp3, sp2 and sp orbital hybridizations of the carbon atom, graphic conventions and use of curved arrows in organic reactions;
- on the oxidation number and formal charge in organic compounds;
- on the nomenclature of the main families of organic compounds based on functional groups;
- on the conformational analysis of alkanes and cycloalkanes;
- on structural isomerism and stereoisomerism; enantiomers and diastereoisomers;
- on the main organic reactions: electrophilic addition, aromatic electrophilic substitution, nucleophilic substitution, nucleophilic addition and nucleophilic acyl substitution;
- on Fisher, Haworth and conformational projections of sugars.
Exercises on the reactivity of organic functional groups and on the properties of organic solvents.
