Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge of the design process of green areas and the main tools for analysis and design.
Particular attention will be paid to the design of urban spaces: public gardens, neighborhood parks, play areas and private gardens.
The lessons will take place in part in the project sites in order to increase the critical analysis skills as a starting point for the design process, in order to provide students with the cultural foundations of the design of open spaces and the compositional principles for the design.
The design of an open space, the theme of the main exercise of the course, will allow students to experience the entire design and construction process.
Prerequisites
Basic graphic representation skills. Further graphic representation techniques of the project will be acquired during the course
Teaching Methods
The course will take place through lectures in the classroom and remotely, practical exercises concerning the methods of analysis, survey and design of green areas; thematic seminars; inspections on the project area.
The course also includes graphic exercises related to the exam topic.
Further information
Attendance of lectures and exercises strongly recommended. For the 2020/2021 academic year, the chosen design theme concerns the development of a project for a private garden.
Type of Assessment
Verification of learning and achievement of training objectives will be carried out through: the evaluation of the exercises carried out during the course; the evaluation of the final documents, with particular attention to the representation of the project and the presentation of the work.
Course program
The course aims to provide students with the tools to develop a project of an open space, public or private.
Specifically, the main issues related to the design composition and the various structural elements of the green space will be addressed, with particular attention to the phases of the design process.
The open space project, broken down into the different phases of design and construction, will introduce themes related to the new construction, recovery, regeneration of abandoned areas and the restoration of historic greenery.
The actors of the design process and the ways of representing and presenting the project will be analyzed.
Through the analysis of completed projects, the issues of urban planning and territorial framework and thematic analyzes for the knowledge of the project area will be addressed.
The course will provide the basic knowledge for the use of software necessary for the drafting of the project.
