Learning Objectives
Knowledge: wood and its properties, for forest and plantation management for wood production or in the forest operations and in the woodworking. Additional expertise on load-bearing timber and wood as biofuel. Cable yarder components, type and use.
Skills acquired: assessment of the quality of timber and suitability of its uses, analyse the characteristics of wood (as round or sawn wood, or as an artefact), and assess the correctness of the environment conservation condition. Cable yarding planning and design
Ability:
- professional skill: 1) expertise on the choice of wood species and the correctness of use; 2) competence on wood processing and wood conservation; 3) improvement of forest operation efficiency and effectiveness in mountainous areas.
- research ability: 1) potentiality of innovation about wood and wood products; 2) critical aspects about wood in relation to provenance, silviculture, forestry; 3) innovation and improvement of efficiency/safety in cable logging.
Prerequisites
Forest operation, wood quality and grading.
Botany
Forest botany
The lectures and exercitation are not mandatory. However the frequency is recommended.
Type of Assessment
Written exam. Practical test.
Final oral examination. The written exam includes one exercise about cable yarding planning and design, 5 multiple-choice tests and an exercise about intermediate support dimensioning. The practical test consists in a microscopic identification of wood species.
In the oral examination the property of language; logical ability and critical reasoning will be assessed; level of knowledge related to the topics under discussion; ability to connect the different topics covered in the program.
Course program
