Analysis of the concepts of plant genetic resources, survey, collection, characterisation, conservation and use; dedicated fruit value chains. Case study. Development of new dedicated fruit value chains.

Learning Objectives
To develop the capacity to manage fruit genetic resources and their utilization in order to establish high quality dedicated value chains.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of perennial tree crops and fruit-growing.
Teaching Methods
Lectures. Laboratory. Readings of technical and scientific papers. Brainstorming and development of a project on fruit genetic resources and added value chains.

Written test with open and multiple choice answers; oral exam.
Course program
Lectures: theoretical-formal and legal issues related to the safeguard of local, national and international genetic resources; management of germplasm of woody species for the in situ and ex situ conservation (survey, collection, characterisation and use of accessions); strategies of traditional and innovative conservation; data and information management (data collection, data input, on- and off-line databases); traditional and innovative fruit value chains; utilization of germplasm for the development of dedicated value chains.
Case study: the wild bilberry of Abetone mountain.
Practical and laboratory activities: collection and management of data from experimental plots. Training to the development by the students of a proposal for the establishment of innovative value chains from fruit germplasm.
